4 Characteristics Of Learning Leaders - 1 views

"A number of insightful writers have suggested the skills that people need in order to cope with the 21st century. One of my favourites that appears to summarise all of them is from Jackie Gerstein who has put together a neat pictorial of these skills. See also Tony Wanger's work, which Jackie acknowledges. The skills she has identified are: effective oral and written communication; collaboration across networks; agility and adaptability; grit; resilience; empathy and global stewardship; vision; self-regulation; hope and optimism; curiosity and imagination; initiative and entrepreneurialism; and critical thinking and problem solving. Some of the implications of self-determined learning are:"

"When it comes to high quality education blog posts. Dr Jackie Gerstein is one of my favourite authors. I always find her articles very insightful and full of new ideas and thoughts to learn from. I have shared several of her works in the past and most notably her popular visual on The Educators with a Growth Mindset. However, today I am sharing with you another of her recent works entitled "Growth Mindset: Personal Accountability and Reflection". This is basically a series of questions Jackie developed based on her teaching experience in order to help students "develop and enhance their growth mindsets through personal accountability and reflection". You might want to have a look and share it with your own students ."

23 Maker Learning Reflection Questions For Thoughtful Students - TeachThought PD - 0 views

"Reflection could also be described as the 'opposite' of activating prior knowledge. Reflection is functional neurologically (reinforcing learning as a 'memory), but also useful as a practice, helping students understand the scale and value of what they just experienced. Maker Education is no different-in fact, Maker Learning may benefit even more from reflection than more traditional academic experiences due to the fail-forward/try-again persistence required by this approach. (Check out our Maker Education resources for more reading.) Jackie Gerstein is one of our favorites here at TeachThought, and her usergeneratededucation site is a must-bookmark for all teachers. So, on to the questions for reflection in Maker Learning. Below, Jackie has written 23 possible reflection questions to get you started. Share any others you'd recommend in the comments."

Education 3.0--Where Students Create Their Own Learning Experiences - 0 views

"The following presentation by Jackie Gerstein takes a slightly different approach, considering learners as "connectors, creators, constructivists." In this context, the "web is curriculum," forged by learners as teacher, access to experts through social media, open-access, and the learner-as-connection maker, something that spooks education today."

50 Resources For Teaching With iPads - 4 views

"So we thought we'd start an ongoing collection-that is, one that is updated to reflect trends and changes-of the best resources for teaching with the iPad. This will include resources from all of the best sources, from Apple's own stuff to TeachThought to edutopia to MindShift to DMLCentral to Jackie Gerstein and more. We can update it, or make it a wiki to crowdsource the process, or you can add suggestions in the comments below. Based on the activity of the comments, and the sharing of the post, we'll decide how to handle it moving forward."

Design Thinking Process and UDL Planning Tool for STEM, STEAM, Maker Education | User G... - 2 views

"User Generated Education Education as it should be - passion-based. Design Thinking Process and UDL Planning Tool for STEM, STEAM, Maker Education leave a comment » Post by Jackie Gerstein, Ed.D. @jackiegerstein and Barbara Bray @bbray27. Crossed posted at http://barbarabray.net/2017/06/08/design-thinking-process-and-udl-planning-tool/. If there is a makerspace in your school, it may be down the hall, in the library, or in another building. If there is someone other than the teacher managing the makerspace or there is a schedule for the school, your kids may only be able to use it once a week or month. Some makerspace activities may be focusing on how to use the resources available and may not be connecting the activities to the curriculum or around a real world problem. If this is how the makerspace is set up in your school, then your kids may not have access to the resources, materials, and tools when they need them, especially for STEM or STEAM. In deciding what resources you need based on the learners you have, you may first need to determine how your learners learn best, what projects you plan to do, how you can set up a makerspace in your classroom, and much more. This is why we decided to create a planning tool for makerspaces in the classroom for you using the Design Thinking Process and Universal Design for Learning®."
